Humans and the Food Chain

A recent post on NPR’s food Blog, The Salt, caught my eye.

Turns out we aren’t king of the jungle after all, or at least not at the top of the food chain. Who’s beating us on us poor humans in this eat-or-be-eaten world? Polar bears and orca whales. They’re at the top. And who could blame them? I wouldn’t want to wrestle either of them for a meal.

But why aren’t we at the top? We demand to know how these results were judged! Well, the composition of plant and animal protein in a diet is the main factor. Us humans consume a puny 20% of our calories in meat. But don’t worry, that number is rising.

And of course, if we can’t beat them at there own game, ocean acidification and polar melting will do the job for us. We’ll be top of the food chain soon enough.
