Jason Lauritsen recently wrote an article for ETR on the up and down history of humanity’s relationship with the Everglades. Lauritsen discusses the ignorance and greed that fueled the early development and draining of this ecosystem and how recent attitudes have shifted towards recognizing the many other values the Everglades holds in addition to economic ones. NPR recently posted an article about the deal Florida lawmakers made five years ago to buy almost 300 square miles of Everglades land owned by US Sugar that was ultimately delayed due to the economic downturn. Florida still has the exclusive option to purchase this land; however, this exclusive option ends this week. The article has a good overview of the political, environmental, and economic issues involved. Outside Magazine also has a short article on this.
