Anything For a Buck: Poaching the Redwoods

A new trend in timber thievery is developing in California’s Redwood forests.  According to the New York Times, the National Park Service the parkway running through the national park will now be closed at night, a first step in attempting to combat illegal logging in the forest.  According to the article, poachers are chopping through 2,000 year-old trees to acquire burls, valuable growths with beautiful wood grain.  Unless this “poaching” of the Redwoods is halted, we stand to lose some iconic national treasures that can never be replaced.
